A fortress built from scratch in the Thar Desert — and some of the best food we've had anywhere, in or out of a hotel.
Village Khandi, Pali district, in the Thar Desert about an hour south of Jodhpur.
About 1 hr from Jodhpur. The final stretch off the highway is rural and a little rough.
Nearest station is Jodhpur Junction, around an hour away by car.
Nearest airport is Jodhpur, roughly an hour away.
October to March to avoid the worst of the desert heat. Monsoon (July–September) is a genuinely different experience here too — brief but real rainfall turns the scrub desert green and visitor numbers drop.
Couples and anyone who wants a proper fort experience with food to match. Not for anyone who wants to be in a city or near other restaurants.
Mihir Garh is built to look like it's always been there — a sandstone fort in the middle of the Thar Desert, constructed from scratch using traditional techniques. We went in for the architecture and the desert setting. We left talking mostly about the food.
Handful of oversized suites, most with their own plunge pool, built around a courtyard with carved stonework, peacock murals, and lantern-lit corners that feel genuinely old despite being a modern build. It commits fully to the fantasy without feeling like a theme.
Scrub desert in every direction, with the fort's own pool glowing blue against it after dark. Isolated in the way that's the entire point — nothing else nearby, which is exactly why you're there.
With no other dining options for miles, Mihir Garh leans fully into the kitchen — and it delivers in a way that goes beyond what a remote desert fort has any right to. This was, genuinely, some of the best food we've had anywhere, hotel or otherwise.
Dinners and courtyards lit by lantern light, a pool that turns electric blue after sunset, and desert quiet that's hard to find anywhere else in Rajasthan.

For anyone who wants the full fort fantasy in the desert — and especially anyone who takes their food seriously.
